They can be noisy, crowded and overstimulating. Fortunately, accessibility awareness is growing, and there are now quite a few autism-friendly theme parks and attractions in the UK. To provide guests with a safe and enjoyable visit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legoland.co.uk\/\">Legoland Windsor Resort<\/a> offers a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legoland.co.uk\/plan-your-day\/before-you-visit\/accessibility\/\">accessibility features<\/a>, including the following for those with ASD:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>free travel companion\/assistant tickets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legoland.co.uk\/plan-your-day\/before-you-visit\/accessibility\/theme-park-accessibility\/ride-access-pass\/\">ride access pass<\/a> to skip long queues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>accessible toilets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legoland.co.uk\/explore\/facilities\/total-sensory-space\/\">total sensory space<\/a> that has vibrating bean bags, tactile tunnels, soft lighting, an interactive carpet and more to serve as a calm, quiet zone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme park also has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legoland.co.uk\/plan-your-day\/before-you-visit\/accessibility\/accessibility-enquiry\/\">Accessibility Experience Team<\/a> that can assist you with any enquiries you might have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Diggerland Theme Park<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diggerland.com\/\">Diggerland<\/a> is a theme park with a twist \u2013 it uses diggers, dumpers and other construction equipment to create adventure rides. It also has indoor soft play, safari rides, and plenty of other activities for the family. There are 4 Diggerlands in the UK \u2013 located in Kent, Devon, Durham and Yorkshire. They\u2019ve found that disabled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diggerland.com\/visiting-diggerland-theme-park-with-a-disability\/\">children have a great time<\/a>, and they\u2019ve worked hard to provide a range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diggerland.com\/disability-information\/\">accessibility features<\/a> including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>free travel companion\/assistant tickets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>disabled parking, toilets and access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diggerland.com\/diggerland-durham\/\">sensory room<\/a> that guarantees peace and quiet (this is available in the Durham theme park)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you wish to travel by train to Diggerland in Durham, then the closest station is Durham, and you will need to catch a bus from there. It\u2019s an award-winning accessible venue with plenty of facilities and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandcastle-waterpark.co.uk\/access-for-all\/#withAutism\">accessibility features for guests with autism<\/a> including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>queue fast-track policy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>quiet hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ear defenders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an autism-friendly quiet room<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>floatation aids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme park has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandcastle-waterpark.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/October-17-SWP-Story-Latest-Version(3).pdf\">sandcastle waterpark story<\/a> to prepare guests with autism for their visit and what sights, sounds and sensations to expect. While they do try to cater to the needs of guests with additional needs, their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.draytonmanor.co.uk\/plan-your-visit\/accessibility\">accessibility features<\/a> don\u2019t include a sensory room.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That being said, the theme park is home to Europe\u2019s only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.draytonmanor.co.uk\/theme-park\/rides-attractions\/thomas-land\">Thomas Land<\/a>, with rides and characters from the popular television show Thomas the Tank Engine. A <a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/essentials\/engine-autism-track-new-thomas-tank-engine-blockbuster-film-64708\">study<\/a> conducted by the National Autistic Society found that children with ASD tend to respond strongly to characters from the show more so than to other children\u2019s television show characters, which is why we thought it worth including the resort in this list.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in learning more about the theme park, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.draytonmanor.co.uk\/info\/contact-us\">contact<\/a> Drayton Manor (you could also read this <a href=\"https:\/\/acuriousjourney.com\/visit-thomas-land-with-autism\/\">entertaining account<\/a> of a trip to Thomas Land written by the parent of a child with ADS).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Camp Mohawk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campmohawk.org.uk\/\">Camp Mohawk<\/a> is a woodland adventure centre and campsite set across 5 acres of countryside in Berkshire. The multi-functional centre is specially designed for children and young people with additional needs, primarily those with ASD.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are plenty of outdoor and indoor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campmohawk.org.uk\/facilities\/\">facilities<\/a> \u2013 such as a wildlife area, swimming pool, sensory garden, archery range, soft play area, adventure play, ancient woods and more. And the camp has developed all of these facilities to ensure they are as accessible as possible. Some of their accessibility features include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>disabled toilets and disabled access \u2018wet room\u2019 bathroom facilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campmohawk.org.uk\/sensory-room\/\">sensory rooms<\/a> to stimulate and relax the senses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are particularly touching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campmohawk.org.uk\/testimonials\/\">testimonials<\/a> from people with ASD on the site, who share fond memories of their experiences there. If you travel by train to Camp Mohawk, then the closest station is Wargrave. Run by the Postal Heritage Trust, the museum has rides that go through hidden tunnels, exhibitions, and fun-filled interactive displays.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has a wide variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postalmuseum.org\/visit-us\/accessibility\/\">accessibility features<\/a> and has worked with Ambitious about Autism to include events and resources that support autistic and neurodiverse guests. Some of these include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postalmuseum.org\/visit-us\/accessibility\/autism-spectrum-conditions\/\">information pack<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postalmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Complete-Visual-Story.pdf\">visual story<\/a> to help guests know what to expect on their visit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pre-visit films<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>communication cards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sensory bags that contain stim toys <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ear defenders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also accessible toilets and a Changing Places toilet in the museum.
