While studying at university, train travel was not optional. It was how she got to lectures, how she returned home during the <a href=\"https:\/\/passengerassistance.com\/jpn\/blog\/passenger-assistance-trains-christmas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">holidays<\/a>, and how she stayed connected with family and friends. But needing\u00a0assistance\u00a0meant that every journey began long before she reached the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discovering the <a href=\"http:\/\/booking.passengerassistance.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Passenger Assistance app<\/a> made that planning much simpler, turning what could sometimes be a time-consuming process into something she could do in just a few minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have always requested assistance on trains and I usually had to do it over the phone. So I usually had to call and wait for them to pick up and do all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes you might be using one train operator going somewhere and then the journey back is with another train operator. And it\u2019s like you have to call two different train operators and repeat the same stuff again and it\u2019s all too much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Travelling between university and home already came with deadlines, packing, exam&nbsp;stress&nbsp;and long days. Adding administrative hurdles before even getting on the train only amplified the pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there was always a quiet uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Particularly on evening arrivals, she never knew for certain whether someone would be there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cParticularly if my train\u00a0was\u00a0arriving at night\u2026 sometimes there would just be no one on the platform. And nobody would show up. She admits she was sceptical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought, let me try the app. And I was&nbsp;really nervous&nbsp;at first that it&nbsp;wouldn\u2019t&nbsp;work, but then I was like, let me just&nbsp;sort of put&nbsp;my faith in it and see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What surprised her most was <a href=\"https:\/\/passengerassistance.com\/jpn\/blog\/empowering-inclusive-travel-passenger-assistance-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how straightforward it felt<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was extremely easy. There was nothing on the app that I&nbsp;wasn\u2019t&nbsp;familiar with. It&nbsp;wasn\u2019t&nbsp;like particularly technological.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUsing the app is&nbsp;literally like&nbsp;you press a few buttons and&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;done.&nbsp;That\u2019s&nbsp;why I was worried that they&nbsp;weren\u2019t&nbsp;actually going&nbsp;to show up because I was like, is this&nbsp;actually like&nbsp;a real thing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of calling at least 24 hours in advance and waiting on hold, she could request&nbsp;assistance&nbsp;in minutes up to two hours before her journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the app, you can just do everything in one go. You&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;have to speak to anyone if you&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;want to. And it takes like five minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That shift from lengthy phone calls to&nbsp;just a few taps changed how travel felt. It removed one layer of stress before the journey had even begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when she arrived at the station, staff were there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe people showed up with the ramp to get me on. They showed up with the ramp to get me off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That reliability matters most when the journey itself matters. Travelling to university. Travelling home. Travelling for work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I used to book&nbsp;assistance&nbsp;over the phone,&nbsp;there\u2019s&nbsp;definitely been&nbsp;times when I booked&nbsp;assistance&nbsp;and nobody came\u2026 But whenever I use the app, people do show up and get me on the train.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now living in central London, Becky does not need&nbsp;assistance&nbsp;for every local journey. But when she travels further across the UK for work, events or to see family booking through the app is the first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking through the app, Becky surprised even herself with how often she had used the app: \u201cI knew I\u2019d&nbsp;taken quite a few journeys&nbsp;using&nbsp;Passenger Assistance but I&nbsp;didn\u2019t&nbsp;realise how many, but&nbsp;yeah,&nbsp;I\u2019ve&nbsp;taken quite a few.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ease still stands out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0quick,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0clear,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0really easy\u00a0to use. I just\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0feel like calling\u00a0someone and talking to them on the phone. It just makes train travel as a Disabled person in the UK so much easier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of navigating different systems and repeating information, everything is in one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has even recommended it to colleagues who feel anxious about train travel who fed back similar feelings. She said: \u201cI did recommend it&nbsp;actually to&nbsp;one of my&nbsp;co workers&nbsp;who was coming from Manchester to London and he did use it&nbsp;and he said it was&nbsp;really good. Normally he hates travelling but he said this made it so much easier for him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For disabled students travelling to lectures, graduates commuting to work or anyone heading home after a long term away, transport is more than&nbsp;logistics. It is access to education, to employment, to independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Becky, Passenger Assistance does not remove every barrier. But it removes the uncertainty around booking and showing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery time I\u2019ve used&nbsp;it&nbsp;I haven\u2019t had any issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What once felt like an administrative hurdle now takes minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was so easy, I thought it couldn\u2019t be real.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, it simply feels like it should have always been that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Passenger Assistance makes train travel as a Disabled person in the UK smoother if you like to request assistance in advance.
