I love all things accessibility, so it\u2019s no surprise that I\u2019m always keen to check out the latest apps on the market for blind and vision-impaired people like me.&nbsp;These apps, along with my long cane, are my independence. They\u2019re what help me navigate the world independently.&nbsp;The assistive tech and apps I use transform inaccessible tasks.&nbsp;When I\u2019m travelling, apps help me plan and book a journey, check my trains are running on time, get from A to B, and so much more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So what apps do I use when out and about?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>BlindSquare&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BlindSquare is an app specifically designed for blind and vision-impaired people.&nbsp;Whilst navigating, it lets you know about points of interest, and also whilst giving information on intersections throughout your route.&nbsp;It also works with third-party apps such as Apple or Google Maps to enhance its functionality. Both working in conjunction together are fantastic!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blindsquare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BlindSquare.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Apple or Google Maps&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s always a plus when the built-in apps on our devices are fully accessible.&nbsp;Many of the mainstream apps that are available on our phones are great when navigating when travelling. These apps can give you turn-by-turn directions, and narrate directions whilst on the go. They can be specified for driving, walking or public transport \u2013 each coming in useful for different situations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They can seek out your current location, which can be really handy when trying to orientate yourself, particularly in an unfamiliar location.&nbsp;&nbsp;It won\u2019t be to the nearest centimetre, but they are generally very accurate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further to orientating, both apps can be used as an accessible compass which can help you get back on track.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Moovit&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll always find myself navigating to the Moovit app when I\u2019m travelling by bus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It uses a bus&#8217;s internal beacon to send real-time information to the Moovit app. It\u2019ll let you know when the bus you want is approaching your bus stop. You can also track your journey as it\u2019ll announce the stop at your destination.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Download Moovit from the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/gb\/app\/moovit-public-transport\/id498477945\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">App Store<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.tranzmate&amp;hl=en-GB&amp;pli=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Play Store.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>AccessAble&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever I have an upcoming trip, I always like to plan in advance whenever I can. Equally, I also like an element of spontaneity too. The AccessAble app helps me achieve both!\u00a0Through its detailed access guides, AccessAble \u201c takes the chance out of going out\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The thing I love the most about AccessAble is the intricate detail \u2013 there are no assumptions, it gives the specifics. We all know that accessibility isn\u2019t a one-size-fits-all all approach.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information includes details about ramps and lifts, accessible toilets, hearing loops and so much more\u2026 Pretty much everything you\u2019d need.\u00a0As a blind person, something I personally find helpful: is the clear instructions on the locations of doors, and the exact location of a venue.\u00a0AccessAble makes planning a visit much less stressful and tons easier.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessable.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AccessAble.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Trainline&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever I\u2019m travelling by train, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrainline.com\/\">Trainline<\/a> app is my go-to.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, the ease and accessibility of booking tickets mean that I don\u2019t have to navigate inaccessible platforms. In my opinion as a screen reader user, there are few websites that allow you to book train tickets accessibly and independently. The Trainline app alleviates a lot of that stress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One feature that I also find really useful is being able to track the train I\u2019m on, particularly if there are no audio announcements when on board. It allows me to know where I am, and keep track of the expected arrival or departure time should any delays occur.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Passenger assistance&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Passenger Assistance app is a real game changer! Even now, I\u2019m still amazed when a journey is confirmed within as little as 5-10 minutes of me putting the request through.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even better, you can let station staff know your accessibility needs, making everything much less stressful.\u00a0Once you submit your request, it\u2019s sent to the train operator who will do the rest. You\u2019ll then receive a notification once everything has been confirmed.\u00a0I genuinely wonder what we did without the Passenger Assistance app for so long.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Download the Passenger Assistance app from the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/gb\/app\/passenger-assistance\/id1542190496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">App Store<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=uk.co.transreport.pa&amp;utm_source=pawebsite&amp;utm_campaign=homepage1&amp;pli=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Play Store.<\/a> You can also book assistance via the <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.passengerassistance.com\/?_ga=2.121029256.144850419.1682856441-1038084543.1666376697&amp;_gl=1%2a1ui0hok%2a_ga%2aMTAzODA4NDU0My4xNjY2Mzc2Njk3%2a_ga_3FE41MK7X7%2aMTY4Mjg1NjQzNC4xNC4xLjE2ODI4NTY1NjQuNjAuMC4w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Web\u30b5\u30a4\u30c8<\/a> if you prefer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those are some of the apps that I regularly use when travelling.
